Essentia mattresses are made without chemical flame-retardant sprays or treatments. Instead, we use a flame-resistant Kevlar® fabric barrier to meet applicable mattress flammability requirements.

How does it work?

Think of the Kevlar® fabric as a protective layer surrounding the mattress core. It sits beneath the GOTS-certified organic cotton cover, providing flame resistance without the need for chemical flame-retardant treatments.

This approach aligns with Essentia’s commitment to thoughtful materials and a cleaner sleep environment. Our mattresses are also vegan and made without wool or wool padding.

Why is a flame-resistant barrier needed?

Mattresses sold in the United States must meet applicable federal flammability standards. Essentia uses a fabric barrier rather than relying on chemical flame-retardant treatments to meet these requirements.
