What is the scent I am noticing?Updated 11 days ago
Just unboxed your Essentia mattress and noticing a scent? Don’t worry, we’re happy to explain!
Essentia's patented organic latex foams are GOLS-certified and made with >95% organic latex. Our foams are made without petrochemicals, chemical adhesives, or toxic chemical flame retardants.
The scent you’re noticing is associated with the natural organic latex foam, rather than the conventional chemical off-gassing often associated with traditional mattresses.
Natural materials can have their own distinct scent, sometimes described by customers as slightly sweet. The intensity varies from person to person, especially for those who are more sensitive to smells.
Think of freshly baked bread. It has a noticeable aroma when it first comes out of the oven, but that scent gradually fades as it cools. Similarly, when a mattress is packaged shortly after manufacturing, some of the natural latex scent can become more noticeable when the mattress is first unboxed. The organic cotton cover may also absorb some of that scent.
The good news? The scent naturally dissipates over time.
How can I help the scent dissipate faster?
If you’d like to speed up the process, we recommend:
Air out your mattress: Allow your mattress to breathe in a well-ventilated room.
Wash the organic cotton cover: If you’d prefer, you can carefully remove the cover and wash it in cold water with mild detergent. Air dry it before putting it back on the mattress.
The scent is typically most noticeable immediately after unboxing and should gradually fade over time.
What about mattress off-gassing?
Essentia mattresses have been evaluated for low VOC emissions. Our commitment to material selection and sleep environments has also been recognized by Delos, a company focused on wellness in the built environment.
Peter Scialla, Partner and COO of Delos, shared the following:
“We have used the same rigor in this search as we've applied across all of our verticals and have tested and substantiated Essentia's results. The products we select for our program are paramount to our integrity as a company, and we enthusiastically recommend Essentia's mattress as best in class ... as it pertains to low VOC off-gassing and health-related matters.”
We understand that a new mattress scent can be unexpected, especially if you’re sensitive to smells. If you have additional questions or concerns, our team is always happy to help.
